IB Visual Yr 2

I was inspired by Laurie Simmons and her works. Simmons tends to attach unusual objects on the legs of a doll and photograph them. Simmons’ works also consist of dolls staged in a dollhouse. I decided to combine her ideas and add a small whisky bottle attached to doll legs and arms, staged in a doll house. The piece is called Lauren. The whiskey bottle shows how alcohol is what fulfilled her life, what she is made up of. Her personality and life is based of alcohol, causing her to be alone.

This artwork turned out differently than I expected it to but I think it definitely worked out for the best. I wanted to do a portrait with me blowing out smoke and a hand grasped around my neck, but things just didn’t end up working out during the process but I decided to just go with it. I like the disturbing nature of the piece and how the gray tones brings out a sense of mystique. The piece demonstrates the essence of grotesque and significantly reminds me of an Otto Dix piece.

The piece, Hansel, is inspired by the action of rolling a joint. When one rolls a joint, they have to lick it in order to seal it. I decided to take that action and emphasize on it by making the tounge longer, and more snake-like. The tongue was inspired by Marvel’s Venom and the use of ink helped add small details to the artwork and helped bring out the idea of being unhinged.
